Coverage of President Manuel L. Quezon’s return to the Philippines from a trip to Japan and China, via a page from The Sunday Tribune Magazine. President Quezon headed to Luneta to address a massive crowd (estimates ran up to 50,000 people), reiterating his veto of the bill on religious instruction. Captions follow:
“This popular demonstration,” the President declared in a short speech, “can only have one meaning… that you have come here to assure me that both my veto on the bill regarding religious instruction and my stand on the question of the separation of Church and State have met with your approval…”
“I cannot refuse, and the government cannot refuse, the exercise of free speech to prelates… Free speech is a Constitutional right… But in the pastoral letter, they (archbishops and bishops of Cebu) were expressing their collective opinions… I am ready for a showdown…”
“And, if I am right in my interpretation of the significance of this demonstration, you make me very happy…”
