We Want Magsaysay, 1953. Lyrics and music by Raul Manglapus, arranged and conducted by Nestor Robles. From The Marching Songs of Raul Manglapus.
After the war Manglapus had a brief bout with journalism, as a correspondent and a little later as a versifying columnist, finished his law studies, went abroad for post-graduate work, got married, then came back to Manila and settled down to the comparatively quiet life of a practicing lawyer and college professor. But there came another call to combat. In 1953, Manglapus was chosen to head the Magsaysay for President Movement as national coordinator. His liveliest contributions to the campaign were Mambo Magsaysay and We Want Magsaysay, which had the voters humming, dancing and thinking.
The march was written after the mambo. Manglapus sang both songs at a try-out to the Guy himself. The rest is history.
This original recording features Rene Antonio.
